Sri Lanka holidays

The island of Sri Lanka is shaped like an enormous teardrop falling from the southern tip of India, separated by a series of stepping-stone coral islets. Formerly known as Ceylon and as Serendib, the lovely island of Sri Lanka has known Portuguese, Dutch and English colonisation and today still displays a fascinating blend of local and old colonial cultures in a landscape of upland tea plantations, jungles and a coastline of palm-fringed beaches.

Sri Lanka holidays with Abercrombie & Kent can take in all the sights and sounds of this remarkable country, as well as some of its finest hotels and will effortlessly combine history with relaxation.

For an inspiring holiday to Sri Lanka visit Nuwara Eliya, the heart of Sri Lanka's tea plantations. The town was created by the British during colonial times and as a result, the homes in the area are very English in style, with manicured lawns and Georgian architecture.

For a more relaxing stay why not allow your Sri Lanka holiday take you to the coast, Tangalle, known best for its beaches offers charms of its own - with long, often deserted beaches shaded by coconut palms.  Alternatively why not combine your Sri Lanka holiday with the coral atolls of the Maldives just a short flight away.

Visit the city of colourful history, Galle, its Dutch atmosphere is very much alive and its most popular attraction is the magnificent Dutch fort, branded a World Heritage site by UNESCO a certain recommendation for any holiday to Sri Lanka. A more cultural offering would be a visit to Kandy, the last Royal capital of Sri Lanka, is situated amongst wooded hills on the shores of a lake and, due to its rambling colonial buildings and temples.

Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and is the largest city in this country.  Located on the west coast of the island it is a busy and vibrant city with a mixture of modern life, colonial buildings and ruins. Just 40 miles from Colombo lies Bentota which has some of the finest beaches on the Indian Ocean coastline on one side and a large river on the other. Naturally there are many watersports available from jet skiing to more relaxing river cruises.

It is the land of smiles and hospitality - the natural friendliness of the Sri Lankans is yet another aspect that makes Sri Lanka holidays so special.
