HERITAGE: Traditional house, Tunis

Travel east to Tunisia, birthplace of the Carthaginian challenge to the ancient Roman Empire and treasure-trove of ruins, columns glowing yellow in the low evening night, perfectly preserved in the desert sands. Easily accessible Tunisia offers a wealth of interest together with its glorious beaches.

TUNIS AND SIDI BOU SAID

The capital Tunis is an old fortified town which evolved into a city under the Arabs. Masterpieces of Arab-Islamic architecture such as the Zitouna Mosque can be found at the centre of the old city. Tunis is also recommended for its medina, the Tourbet el Bey (mausoleum), the colourful souks amongst the narrow alleyways and the Bardo Museum, housed in a 19th century palace with its Roman mosaics. Outside of Tunis, the village of Sidi Bou Said offers a unique scenery of domes, arched doors and baclonies in blue and white and the ruins of the great maritime city of Ancient Carthage are scattered along the coast.
